Activity 1

Listen to music
Whole class
5 min.

Teacher:

“During the classical period (from 1720 to 1830), famous melodies you might have heard before were composed. Here is a song which brings together a few well-known melodies. Can you hear each individual melody?”

A15: Classical melodies - tutti (play)

Classical melodies - tuttiA10

Solutions:

J. Haydn: Symphony Nr. 94, 2nd movement, Andante IIA11
W. A. Mozart: 'A Little Night Music'A12
Beethoven: Symphony Nr. 5A13

Teacher:

“These melodies were written by three famous classical composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Joseph Haydn. They are also known as the representatives of 'Viennese Classicism'. Their music is light, entertaining, cheerful and simple. That explains why they've been so successful to this day.”

Activity 2

Sing
Whole class
10 min.

Teacher:

“Let's now listen to another well-known piece by Ludwig von Beethoven. What comes to your mind when you listen to the piece?”

Ode to Joy' (instrumental)A14

Teacher:

“The piece is called ‘Ode to Joy'. It's part of Beethoven's 9th Symphony and was played for the first time in 1824. The song stands for freedom, joy and solidarity. It's often played at festivals and celebrations. Did you know that it's also the European anthem? Today, we are going to come up with lyrics for this melody. But let's practice singing the melody on 'du' first. I will sing it first and you will repeat after me.”

M6 Printout

Teacher:

“Now that we can sing the melody, we are going to come up with lyrics for the first part of the song. To do this, let's collect words around a specific topic - for example peace, class cohesion, etc.”

The class chooses a topic and collates words on the board.

M6: Writing down lyrics (hand out to each pupil)

Teacher:

“Let's listen to the first few seconds of the piece again and come up with ideas for the lyrics.”

Teacher:

“Let's now practice our lyrics to the melody, and sing it together.”

Optional

As an option, divide the class into small groups to write the lyrics. Each group will need to be able to listen to the music in order to make sure that their text fits the melody.
