Preparation

Print materials (for the entire series):

Additional materials:

  • Printout M8, Instruments

Activity 1

Play music
In pairs
25 min.
Instruments (e.g Xylophones)
M8 printout

M8: Morning Mood sheet music - with colours (hand out to each pupil)

Give out musical instruments (e.g. xylophones) to be shared between two students. Use colour cards to indicate where the notes are on the instrument - cards can be prepared by the teacher before the lesson to save time. Simply sellotape the colour cards to the correct notes on the instrument.

Assign each pair a bar number (1 to 4) from the 'Morning Mood' melody.

Teacher:

"In your pair use the sheet music (M8) and try to figure out how the music is played. The colour of the notes show you where to play on your instrument. Take it in turn to practise the melody. One of you can count in 1-2-3-4-5-6, and the other can start playing the melody after 6."

Teacher:

“Keep practising until you are both confident playing the melody."

Tip

To keep things quiet, children can use the stick the wrong way around, or use their fingers instead.

Activity 2

Play as an orchestra
Whole class
15 min.
Instruments (e.g Xylophones)

Pick a student to be the conductor and lead the group. Pupils sit in pairs in a semi-circle and according to what bar they have been assigned. Bar 1 sit on the left of the conductor, then bar 2, bar 3, and finally bar 4 on the right.

Teacher:

"We’ll now try to play the whole melody together. The conductor will give each group a cue for when to play their bar. If you’ve been given the same bar number as another group, you will all play together at the same time. At the start, the conductor will count us in - 1-2-3-4-5-6."

Demonstrate how it works once. Children can then take it in turn to play or be the conductor.

Activity 3

Lapbook
Independently
5 min.
Lapbook

Teacher:

"Stick the sheet music in your lap book. Make sure you glue it in the right place."

If there's still time...

… try to play the Morning Mood melody on instruments as a group again. You can ask pupils who are not playing to sing along to the melody.

… children can continue to decorate their lap books.

Skills learned in this lesson:

Students…

… learn to play the Morning Mood melody using instruments.
… implement simple musical parameters (volume, tempo, articulation) and use conducting gestures while making music.
