Activity 1
M3: Camera with filmstrip from the life of Edvard Grieg (hand out one to each pupil)
Teacher:
"Colour the different pictures and cut them out"
"I am now going to read Edvard Grieg’s life story. While listening, try to sort the pictures in the correct order. If you are right, they will reveal a secret word! For the moment, just place the pictures on the film strip, don’t glue them yet."
Edvard Grieg’s life story
I was born many years ago on 15th June 1843.
Can you find the picture where I’m only a baby?
My parents called me Edvard Grieg. Unlike most people today, my family didn’t have a television, a car or a computer. They didn’t exist when I was born. I spent my childhood in Bergen. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway.
Do you know where Norway is? (short break to discuss where Norway is with the children)
And can you find a picture of my hometown?
I had four siblings - three older and one younger. My father was a wealthy merchant and my mother a successful pianist and poet. She also was a respected piano teacher. I took piano lessons with her from the age of six.
Can you find the picture of a piano?
I loved music. We organised concerts at our house and I always listen to music. At the age of nine, I wrote my first composition or piece of music. I was very proud of that.
Can you find my sheet music?
Even as a teenager, I spent most of my days playing the piano and creating new pieces of music. Unfortunately, I didn’t do too well at school. I didn’t get along with my teachers and had to repeat year 9…
I was teased a lot because of my interest in music, but I didn’t really like science or maths. I ended up studying music in the city of Leipzig (Germany) and learned a lot more about music there.
I returned to Norway after my studies and married my distant cousin Nina Hagerup in 1876.
Isn’t the ring beautiful?
Together we had a daughter who sadly died when she was only 1 years old. That was very sad. My wife was a singer and could also play the piano. That’s why we travelled through Europe together and gave concerts in different countries. We went to Italy, Belgium, Denmark, France, Poland and many other places.
Of course we needed a map to help us find our way there.
After all this travelling, I moved back to a house near Bergen in Norway.
Can you see my house?
There I wrote many songs, music for choirs and piano pieces. On 4th September 1907, I died of a lung disease.
Activity 2
Discuss the order in which the pictures should be with the whole class.
Teacher:
"Now that you’ve placed all the pictures in the correct order on your filmstrip, can you tell me what the secret word is?" Answer: CONCERT
Teacher:
"You can now glue the pictures representing the stages of Edvard Grieg’s life on your filmstrip and cut out the camera (M3). I’ll help you carve the slits in the middle of the camera with a craft knife, and you will then be able to pull the filmstrip through the camera."
Activity 3
Teacher:
"Now stick the camera and its filmstrip to the inside left of your lap book. Make sure that you only glue the right and left hand sides of the camera so that the filmstrip can move through it."
If there's still time...
… Listen to 'Morning Mood' again and ask pupils why they think the title goes well with the music.
A1: 'Morning Mood' (play)
