Activity 1

Move to music
In pairs
5 min.

Teacher:

"Let’s dance! With your partner, you are going to mirror each other. Decide in advance who will be leading and who will be following. Stand up facing each other. When the music begins, the person leading will start moving and the person following will mirror the movements. Try to follow the different speeds or tempos (fast or slow) you can hear in the music."

A1: Mirror Dance (play)

Mirror DanceA1

After a few minutes, switch the roles of leader and follower.

M1: Modes of transport (jogger, car and high speed train)

With the class, try to identify the differences between these pictures in terms of speed (slow, medium, fast).

1. Teacher: "I now need 2 volunteers. One person will indicate the different speeds using the picture cards - make sure you hold the card so that everyone can see it. The other person will play the drum following the correct tempo. The rest of the class will move around the room following the given pace. After a few rounds, I will pick 2 new volunteers and we will swap places."

2. After a few rounds, stop showing the picture card to the class. Teacher: "Now, we’ll only hear the drum. See if you can figure out which tempo is used and follow the correct pace."

Optional

Depending on how the class gets on, you can introduce more tempo variations using pictures of other modes of transport - walking, bike, rocket.

Activity 3

Listen to music
Independently
15 min.

M2: 'La Follia' Tempo markings (hand out to each pupil)

Teacher: "We are now going to listen to a piece of music called 'La Follia'. It was written by an Italian composer called Arcangelo Corelli. I will play it 3 times. In this piece of music, there are 3 different speeds or tempos which keep changing. Every time a change happens, you will hear a signal played on the triangle.

1. Try to hear the changes in tempos. Listen to the different speeds and point at the matching pictures on your worksheet.

2. Listen again and as the different speeds appear, tick the correct pictures on your worksheet.

3. We’re now going to listen again and check that you all spotted the different tempos correctly.’

A2: The different tempos in 'La Follia' (play)

Tip

Ask pupils to take good care of their tempo markings worksheet as they will need it again for the next lesson.

If there's still time...

... children can take a physical break (e.g. 15 jumping jacks, 10 squats, etc.). Show them the exercises first, then let them choose which moves they want to do.

Skills learned in this lesson:

Students...

… improvise their own movements inspired by Achangelo Correlli’s 'La Follia'.
… move to music in tempo.
… recognise different tempos and distinguish them from each other while listening to 'La Follia'.
