Preparation

Print materials (for the entire series):

Activity 1

Listen to music
Whole class
10 min.

Teacher:

"The 'Water Music' consists of 3 suites with a total of 22 shorter pieces of dance music. Today we'll learn about a dance called 'gigue'. We'll find out more about its structure. We are going to listen to different sections of the dance. As we listen, you'll need to decide if the music you hear sounds similar to the previous section or not. If you think two parts sound the same, select the corresponding symbol. If you think they sound different, choose a new symbol."

Start game 1 and project it on a screen so that the class can see what's going on. When the question mark appears on the screen, students have to decide which symbol to choose.

Activity 2

Body percussion
Whole class
15 min.

Teacher:

"Each symbol has a corresponding body percussion element that we will put to music:

yellow - clap your hands
red - tap your chest
green - stamp with your feet
blue - slap your thighs"

Teacher:

“I'm going to play the piece of music again. Listen carefully and notice when the music and symbols change. Make sure you play the correct body percussion alongside the music.”

Start game 2

In this second round, students add body percussion elements corresponding to each sections.

Start game 3.

Activity 3

Play music
Whole class
20 min.
Instruments (if possible one instrument per child, and a total of four instrument groups)

Divide the class into 4 groups.

Teacher:

"I will now assign each group one of the four symbols as well as an instrument (for example drums, chimes, boomwhackers or rattles). Each group will play along to the music when their symbol comes up."

Start game 3

If there's still time...

Instruments (if possible one instrument per child, and a total of four instrument groups)

… Activity 3 can be repeated and the groups can swap symbols and instruments.

Skills learned in this lesson:

Students...

... actively listen to the gigue from the 'Water Music' and explore the structure of the piece.
... accompany the different sections of the piece with instruments.
