Task:
Think together about what it means to compose music. What does a composer actually do? What steps are necessary to create a piece of music? Think of everything that could be involved and write your ideas on the board.
What does ‘composing’ mean?
Composing means inventing, creating and writing down music so that others can play it. A composer thinks up melodies, rhythms and harmonies and combines them to create a piece of music. It's not just about choosing individual notes, but also about how these notes sound together, how the music is structured and what feelings it should trigger when listened to.
What does composing involve?
- Collecting ideas and finding inspiration: Composers are inspired by many things, such as a country, a landscape, a story, a mood or even everyday sounds.
- Developing melodies and rhythms: Composers think about how this melody should sound: happy, sad, calm or exciting...
- Choosing instruments: Composers decide which instruments will play the music. Each instrument has a different timbre that influences the mood of the piece.
- Determining the structure: Composers decide how the different parts of the piece are arranged and how they are connected.
- Dynamics and tempo: Composers decide how loud or soft and how fast or slow the music is played. These decisions influence how the piece comes across at the end.
- Write down notes: Finally, the music is written down in notes so that the other musicians can play it. Every nuance must be recorded exactly: Which note, for how long, with which instrument and at what tempo?

As you have just learnt, composing means being creative and experimenting with the building blocks of music. Now you will become composers yourselves. You have the opportunity to change the existing piece of music ‘Rondo alla Turca’ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and turn it into your own work.
The teacher provides the students with access to the Virtual Music House via VR headsets, tablets or PCs.
Tip
If there are not enough VR headsets, tablets, or PCs available, two or three students can work together on one device. In a computer room, headphones are highly recommended, as the devices are usually very close to each other.
Task:
Enter the INSTRUMENTARIUM room of the Fortissimo Music House and play with the various elements of the composition.
1. Select individual parts from the composition.
2. Try out how the piece changes when you have different instrument families playing.
3. Change the volume and tempo.
