Lesson 3

We play, listen to, and feel the meter with Boomwhackers.

Activity 1

Boomwhacker
Whole class
15 min.
Boomwhacker (1 per child)

The following stop signal should first be discussed with the children

Teacher:

'If I hold my boomwhacker across my head with one hand, you hold your boomwhacker with both hands and place it behind your head on your shoulders so that the boomwhacker is no longer played."

The teacher discuss the 3 Boomwhacker rules with the children

Teacher:

"Hold your Boomwhacker with both hands until it's your turn. One child starts and tries to make a sound or noise with the Boomwhacker. The child then winks at another child who has to try a new sound with the Boomwhacker. How many different sounds can we make?"

Activity 2

Boomwhacker
Independent working
10 min.
Boomwhacker (1 per child)

The class sits in a circle. Each child is given a Boomwhacker.

Teacher:

"I start by hitting my Boomwhacker once in my hand. Then, taking turns, each child passes the sound with the Boomwhacker, so they also hit the Boomwhacker once in their hands. The task is to pass the sound on at a consistent tempo."

The Pavane can be played with the meter to support this

Teacher:

'Now we're going to introduce another rule. If one child hits the Boomwhacker twice in the hand in quick succession, the direction of the sound will change.'

Activity 3

Drawing to music
Independent working
20 min.
Boomwhacker (1 per child)

Teacher:

'Sit together in groups of four. I'll play the Pavane and you pass on the sound, with the Boomwhacker, in time, by tapping the Boomwhacker on the floor.'

G. Fauré: Pavane, Op. 50A1

The teacher can prepare by watching the following video (forward series)

Teacher:

'Now we join together hitting the Boomwhackers in half notes in time to the music'

You see this in the last series in the video

If this works well, you can divide the class into two groups: one half carry out the first exercise whilst the other half carry out the second exercise at the same time. Afterwards, exchange the group roles.

If you still have time...

...the teacher can practice the whole note with the children, which is shown in the video with a ribbon. You can also use scarves or arms to do this.

Competencies of this learning unit:

Students...

... learn and follow basic rules for using boomwhackers

... explore different sound possibilities with the boomwhackers and experiment with how they produce sounds

... play sounds at a steady tempo and pay attention to a consistent meter

... develop a feel for the rhythmic structures of the Pavane and coordinate their movements with the music
